The United States has urged Nigerians to reject vote-buying, violence and other forms of electoral malpractice, as Nigeria prepares for the 2023 General Elections.
In a statement issued as part of activities to mark the 246 years of its independence, the United States also highlighted the need to have a robust debate, freedom of expression, and space for the many diverse voices in Nigeria, to be heard.
It further expressed commitment to support Nigeria, on its path towards a more equitable future for all citizens, while reassuring that it would partner with Nigeria, in areas of strengthening health services, educational institutions, agricultural production, providing security training and military equipment, while encouraging entrepreneurship and private sector engagement.
The U.S. also said it recognizes the key pillars of democracy, respect for human rights, rule of law, and the role of all citizens in determining the country’s future.
The statement indicated that several activities have been lined up for the Independence celebration while it recognizes the contributions of some African founding fathers, in achieving democratic leadership around the world.
