Police in Kano has confirmed an attack on one of its officers on patrol after suspected thugs stabbed him in the stomach in an attempt to free two of their members arrested carrying knives.
A statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abdullahi Haruna said the incident happened at Kofar Mata quarters where the thugs were fighting among themselves.
The thugs were dispersed but later regrouped to set free two of their members in Police custody.
The officer was taken to hospital for treatment.
Problem started after a teenage boy whose name was simply given as Saifullahi allegedly died in Police custody.
The death enraged youths in the area who immediately took to the street in protest against the Police.
The statement said the Police Commissioner, Habu Sani has ordered discreet investigation in to the matter.
Normalcy has since been restored.
