President Bola Tinubu has approved major reforms at the Nigeria Police Academy, including the reconstitution of its governing council and the establishment of a new campus to boost policep training and national security.
The President reconstituted the 16-member governing pcouncil of the Police Academy in Wudil, Kano State, appointing the Minister of Police Affairs, Ibrahim Gaidam, as chairman.
Other members include the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, the Inspector-General of Police, and representatives from the Federal Ministries of Education, Finance, and Justice, alongside six appointees representing the geopolitical zones.
According to a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Monday, the Commandant of the Academy, the Provost, and the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of training will serve as ex-officio members, while the Registrar will act as secretary to the council.
In a separate statement, the Presidency also announced the approval of a new Police Academy campus in Erinja, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State, with a take-off grant of ₦15 billion.
The statement explained that the fund, to be sourced from the 2026 TetFund allocation, will support the development of infrastructure, academic facilities, student accommodation, and core training assets.
It added that the decision followed recommendations from a high-level consultative meeting involving relevant stakeholders, and is in line with the Nigeria Police Academy Establishment Act, 2021, aimed at expanding the institution into multiple campuses.
The Presidency says the expansion is expected to strengthen training capacity, improve policing standards, and enhance national security.
