President Bola Tinubu has arrived in Tokyo, Japan, ahead of the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9), where he is expected to join other African leaders, international partners, and global stakeholders to discuss Africa’s economic future.

The President’s aircraft touched down at the Presidential Wing of Haneda International Airport at 12:50 a.m. local time on Tuesday.

He was received by Ambassador Hideo Matsubara, Japan’s Ambassador in charge of TICAD at Haneda, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, and other officials of the Nigerian Embassy.

The three-day summit, scheduled to hold from August 20–22 at Pacifico Yokohama, is themed “Co-create Innovative Solutions with Africa.” It will focus on accelerating Africa’s economic transformation, strengthening institutions, and improving the business environment through private sector investment and innovation.

Discussions will also center on building a resilient and sustainable African society anchored on peace, stability, and human security.

TICAD, a triennial initiative of the Japanese government co-hosted with the United Nations, UNDP, African Union Commission, and the World Bank, alternates between Japan and Africa. The last edition was held in Tunisia in August 2022.

While in Japan, President Tinubu is expected to hold bilateral meetings and engage top executives of major Japanese companies with business interests in Nigeria.

His engagements are anticipated to further drive investments and strengthen economic ties between Nigeria and Japan.
