President Bola Tinubu has declined his assent to the Federal University of Education Numan, Adamawa State (Establishment) Bill, 2024.
In a letter read during plenary by President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, the President explained his decision, taken on December 23, 2024. He cited two key reasons for rejecting the bill, which was recently passed by the National Assembly.
The President raised concerns over Section 22 of the bill, which grants the authority to dispose of land belonging to the federal institution to the governor of Adamawa state.
According to Tinubu, such authority should reside with the President in matters concerning federal government owned property, particularly in the case of federal universities.
Tinubu also pointed out a minor spelling error in the bill. The word “statut” was incorrectly written as “status,”
Citing Section 58(4) of the Constitution, Tinubu justified his decision to withhold presidential assent. The bill was sponsored by Senator Binos Yaroe (PDP, Adamawa South),
