President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commended the conduct of the All Progressives Congress, APC, primaries across the country, as the ruling party intensifies efforts to manage grievances arising from the exercise.
The National Chairman of the APC, Nentawe Yilwatda, disclosed this after a meeting with the President in Lagos on Wednesday, where he briefed him on the outcome of the party’s primary elections nationwide.
Yilwatda described the exercise as highly competitive, with aspirants contesting for governorship, legislative and party positions across the country.
According to him, the scale of participation reflected the political significance of the APC ahead of the next electoral cycle.
The APC chairman also commended party supporters for what he described as orderly conduct during the primaries, despite complaints and disputes recorded in some states.
On concerns surrounding consensus arrangements, Yilwatda explained that the party’s guidelines provided for both consensus and direct primaries.
He said aspirants involved in consensus arrangements voluntarily endorsed agreement forms before the process, while direct primaries were conducted in areas where consensus could not be achieved.
The APC chairman acknowledged that disagreements and dissatisfaction were inevitable after a political contest but stated that the party had activated internal dispute-resolution mechanisms to address post-primary tensions.
He added that reconciliation efforts were already ongoing to prevent divisions within the party ahead of future campaigns.
Yilwatda further revealed that President Tinubu expressed satisfaction with the logistics, organisation and relatively low level of conflict recorded during the exercise.
He also thanked the President for what he described as institutional support for the National Working Committee in enforcing party regulations and strengthening internal party processes.
