President Bola Tinubu has forwarded the name of Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN to the Senate for confirmation as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC).
The President’s request is contained in a letter read during plenary by President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Tuesday.
In the correspondence, President Tinubu urged the Senate to give expeditious consideration and approval to the nomination in line with constitutional provisions.
Senate President Akpabio subsequently referred the request to the Committee of the Whole for legislative action as soon as practicable.
According to the letter, the nomination is in accordance with Section 154, Subsection (1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers the President to appoint the INEC Chairman subject to Senate confirmation.

Meanwhile, President Tinubu has asked the Senate to confirm the nomination of Ayo Omidiran as Executive Chairman of the Federal Character Commission, FCC.
In a letter addressed to the Senate and read during plenary, the President also sought the confirmation of 28 nominees as Federal Commissioners of the Commission.
President Tinubu stated that the nominations were made in line with the provisions of Section 151, Subsection (1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio subsequently referred the request to the Committee on Federal Character for further legislative action and directed the committee to report back within two weeks.
