Aviation unions in Nigeria have prioritized workers welfare as the quickest means of achieving safe skies in the country.
That is the message from aviation labour unions meeting in Lagos for the 3rd Aviation Unions’ Leadership Conference. With the theme “Safe Landing, Strong Leadership,” stakeholders are urging government and industry operators to move beyond promises and take decisive action on workers’ safety, welfare, and rights, warning that neglecting those who keep aircraft flying could put the entire aviation system at risk.
From unresolved welfare issues and outstanding entitlements to calls for improved union rights and stronger government intervention, labour leaders say the future of the industry depends on placing workers at the centre of aviation reforms.
Speaking at the conference, Hector Nnadi, Secretary of the Joint Aviation Trade Unions’ Forum (JATUF), said workers’ welfare must reflect the value they contribute. He added that delays in addressing allowances and conditions of service demoralize staff and could ultimately compromise safety.

Ben Nnabue, National President of the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), condemned the long-standing neglect of former Nigerian Airways workers, describing JATUF as an annual platform for reviewing workers’ rights and safety standards in the sector.
Safiya Araga, Women Forum Leader, JATUF, and Olanike Ogunmoyin, Head of Human Resources and Administration, NCAA Lagos, highlighted ongoing collaboration between unions and the Ministry to promote a motivated, productive, and safe aviation workforce.
For stakeholders, strengthening workers’ welfare remains key to sustaining safe operations and building a more resilient aviation sector in Nigeria.
