Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs says the United States President, Donald Trump is inciting crisis that could potentially spark war in Nigeria.

The Council under the chairmanship of the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar III accuses the American leader of reacting to false claims of genocide against Christians in Nigeria, allegedly scripted by enemies of the country seeking favour from foreign governments.

On October 31, Trump designated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC), citing mass killing of Christians by Islamist jihadists. He followed his claim with threats of military action against the terrorists.

This move has sparked national debate, with some interpreting the threat as an affront on Nigeria’s sovereignty while insisting that killings in the country by terrorists affect both Christians and Muslims.

The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs has joined the debate denying Trump’s allegations of mass killings of Christians, and accusing him of acting on false claims.

Secretary General of the Council, Professor Ishaq Oloyode stated that Trump’s threat of military action is a plan to eliminate Muslims in Nigeria under the guise of addressing genocide.

The Council however called on President Bola Tinubu to address rising insecurity and end senseless killings across the country.
