At least two Nigerian soldiers were reported killed during a gun battle, with ISWAP terrorists in Marte town of Borno State.
Intelligence sources say that the terrorists reportedly infiltrated the town at around 2 a.m on Monday, but were engaged by troops of the battalion stationed in Marte, with reinforcement from the Brigade Headquarters, and close air support, from the Nigerian Air Force.
The coordinated counteroffensive forced the terrorists to retreat, abandoning their plans to overrun the town.
The attackers reportedly fled with some motorcycles, two vehicles, and a number of unserviceable military vehicles, classified as beyond economic repair, some of which were also set ablaze by the fleeing insurgents.
Military sources, however, say there were no reports of any arms, or ammunition taken away, by the insurgents.
Meanwhile, Borno Governor Babagana Zulum has condemned the Boko Haram/ISWAP spate of attacks in various parts of the state, including Maiduguri-Damboa Road, Marte, Chibok, Gwoza, Kala Balge, and other affected communities.
In a statement by his spokesman, Dauda Iliya, the Governor reaffirmed the state government’s unwavering commitment, to working closely with the Federal Government, the military and other security agencies, to contain the security challenges.
The governor said the recent surge in attacks will not deter his government’s resolve, to tackle the scourge of the 16-year-long insurgency.
He urged the people to remain resilient and prayerful.
Governor Zulum concluded by extending his thoughts and prayers to the families of the fallen heroes, innocent civilians, and all citizens of Borno State.
