The Cross River State Police Command has released three nurses from the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital UCTH, who were detained following the death of an accident victim.

Their release came after mounting pressures from the nursing community, who staged a peaceful protest in Calabar.

It was a tense moment at the Cross River State Police Headquarters as nurses from the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, UCTH, demanded the release of three of their colleagues detained after the death of a patient rushed to the hospital by a good Samaritan.

The nurses, all staff of the hospital’s emergency unit, were reportedly invited for questioning but ended up spending the night in police custody, sparking outrage from members of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, NANNM, UCTH chapter.

In response, the Police Command addressed the protesting nurses and gave reasons for the detention.

Led by their Chairman, Eno-Obong Okon, the nurses matched to the police headquarters in protest, calling the detention unjust and demoralizing.

Shortly after the demonstration, the nurses were released, a move that eased tensions among health workers in the state.

The NANNM leadership has called for improved understanding between security agencies and medical professionals, especially in handling emergency cases.
