The United Kingdom has donated £15 million for the provision of vital food and nutrition for vulnerable people in the Nigeria’s North-eastern states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe.

The UK High Commission in Nigeria who made this known in a statement released on Tuesday, said the amount was part of its emergency humanitarian funding.

According to the High Commission, the money will be used to mobilise the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and World Food Programme (WFP) to enable them deliver life-saving schemes in response to the crises in the North-east.

The statement said the funds will also be used to tackle emergency levels of food insecurity and malnutrition for vulnerable people, especially women and children.

The UK has also announced further humanitarian funding to other West African countries in the Sahel region, including Mali, Burkina Faso, Chad and Niger.

This, combined with the £15 million funding allocated to North-east Nigeria, brings the total humanitarian funding to the subregion to £37.65 million.
