British High Commission in Nigeria says its home government has not been formally notified of judgement awarding £420 million as compensation to families of 21 coal miners killed on November 18, 1949, at Iva Valley coal mine in Enugu State.
Enugu State High Court had on Thursday ordered the United Kingdom, UK Government to pay £420 million to families of 21 protesting coal miners killed by security official of the colonial administration about 76 years ago.
The landmark judgement was seen as bringing justice to victims of the coal miners massacre. However, in response to an enquiry by AIT.live, spokesperson for the British High Commission in Nigeria said in a mail that the “UK Government has not been formally notified of this judgment, and was not represented in these proceedings.

“In light of the above, it would not be appropriate to comment.”
The court had also ordered the Nigerian government to engage the UK within 60 days towards implementation of the judgement.
