Seventy seventh World Health Assembly – Daily update 1 June 2024

The need for urgent reforms at the United Nations and the strengthening of global governance structures took centre stage at the Lagos Sub Forum on Wednesday organised to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.

The forum under the theme, “The united nations and search for a new global governance” jointly organised by the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) and the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China brought scholars and diplomats together to review the journey so far of the global body established in the aftermath of World War II to promote peace and security .

Speaking at the Lagos Sub forum, jointly organised by NIIA and Chinese envoy in Lagos,

DG, NIIA, Prof Eghosa Osaghae said the UN has evolved across peacekeeping, humanitarian aid, human rights and climate change. The effectiveness of the global body according to professor Osaghae is central to sustaining global peace and development.

Consul General, China, Yan Yuqin in his own remarks to mark the day said China and Nigeria can work together to promote peace, justice, and common development.

Also speaking at the anniversary, Director of Research, Efem Ubi and Prof Femi Otubanjo NIIA made a call for equity, parity and inclusiveness within the international system.

Speakers agreed that while the United Nations remains an indispensable platform for cooperation, urgent reforms are needed to make it more inclusive, responsive, and reflective of today’s global realities, because Africa need reforms that will guarantee true development.
