Over 2.4 million displaced persons in Nigeria may face hunger and other economic challenges if there are no immediate interventions from government, private and corporate organisations in the country.

Representative of the United Nations High Commission For Refugees in Nigeria, Rahmathulah Mohammed who was speaking at the Open Donations Conference In support of the Internally Displaced Persons in Abuja said the funds received by the agency in 2022 for the welfare displaced persons have reduced.

It was estimated that by the end of 2022, over 108.4 million people were forcibly displaced worldwide as a result of persecution, conflict, violence or human rights violations.

Out of this figure Nigeria accounts for over 3.4 million internally displaced persons who are currently facing the many challenges of poor shelter in IDPs camps, hunger, gross violation of their human rights, in addition to lack of adequate care, freedom, financial problem, family disintegration and poor education.

This Open Donations Conference is aimed at creating a pool of funds through individual and group contributions to ameliorate the sufferings of the internally displaced persons in Nigeria.

Speakers were unanimous that internally displaced persons in Nigeria and everywhere are in need the contributions of well-to-do individuals and organisations to pull them out of their economic and social challenges.

The event was organised by the United Nations High Commission For Refugees and the Al-habibbiya Foundation through its National Zakkat Foundation.
