The United Nations Electoral Needs Assessment Mission is in Nigeria to consult with political parties, lawmakers, security agencies and other relevant stakeholders on technical support in the build-up to the 2023 general elections.

The UN congratulated Nigerians for the new electoral act, which the mission says, will help to improve electoral processes in the country.

Part of the request from the registered political parties was the support for local government autonomy in Nigeria, as they continue to engage stakeholders, particularly the National Assembly, on scrapping the State Independent Electoral Commissions, (SIECs), saying that Nigerians have lost confidence in the state electoral commission’s ability to conduct free, fair and credible elections at the grassroots.
