The Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Professor Is’haq Oloyede, says the unbundling of Mass Communication as a course of study in Nigerian tertiary institutions is untimely.

Oloyede made the remarks in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital at an event to mark the 15th anniversary of the Campus radio of the University of Ilorin.

The event was organised for practitioners to look into the Future of Radio and Artificial Intelligence, including the transformation of the Broadcast space in Nigeria and elsewhere across the world.

In his remarks, the JAMB Registrar who is also a former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, said the idea to unbundle Mass Communication programme at the undergraduate level was not well thought out on the grounds, stating that the development will narrow students scope in the broader discipline of Mass Communication, and by implications also narrowing their chances of securing employment after graduation.

Professor Oloyede who noted that radio broadcasting just like every other broadcast platforms remain critical to national development, explaining that the dwindling state of the present economy requires special focus on radio with the aim of contributing to conversations that could potentially help to find lasting solutions to the current state of affairs.

The University of Ilorin Campus radio has been a laboratory for training and simulation centre to prepare students for future careers in the media industry, including playing a role in community development.
