The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has commended the Federal Government for the rescue of 39 pupils and five teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The commendation came on Thursday when UNICEF Executive Director, Catherine Russell, led a delegation to meet the Wife of the Nigerian President, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
UNICEF also praised the First Lady’s Renewed Hope Initiative, particularly its role in increasing birth registration to 14 million children within two years and advancing campaigns against Female Genital Mutilation.
Russell described investment in women and children as an investment in Nigeria’s future, stressing that children affected by conflict and violence must be protected.
Responding, Senator Tinubu welcomed UNICEF’s support and reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to investing in children through education, protection and efforts to reduce the number of out-of-school children, especially Almajiris.
The UNICEF delegation included the Organisation’s Country Representative, Wafaa Saeed Abdelatef; Chief of Staff, Ted Mary; Senior Adviser on Communication, Marlene Jensen; Head of Project Marline Serrano; and Executive Specialist, Nabila Jamshed.
