Experts from the United States Defense Institute of International Legal Studies (DIILS) have trained 14 Nigerian military officers on new approaches and strategies in tackling existing and emerging security challenges.

The training which held between 15 and 18 of August, 2022 focused on issues involving human rights, laws of armed conflict and the protection of civilians.

Participants explored ways to expand the role of military legal advisors beyond their traditional military justice roles to include involvement of legal advisors to assist in the planning of operations in order to reduce the risk of collateral damages.

Participants were also exposed to techniques of enhancing military investigations in Nigeria, tracking as well as public reporting of incidents where civilians are inadvertently harmed.

DIILS is the lead United States Department of Defense resource for global legal engagement and capacity-building with international defense sector officials.

The 4-day engagement in Abuja was led by U.S. lawyers and military personnel with rich experience in operational law and military justice.

Through these collaboration, U.S. hopes to further develop Nigerian military capability to ensure that the protection of civilians during military operations and to respond swiftly to incidents of civilian casualty during such operations.
