The United States Agency for International Development through Food Basket Foundation International is collaborating with the media in Nigeria to combat voter misinformation and improve voter and civic education as the country counts down to the general election.

The executive director of the foundation, Funmi Akinyele, said the partnership has become necessary to guide the digital space against fake news.

Akinyele said this explains why the group is working with the media and other critical stakeholders including government, telecommunications, civil society, and the general public to minimize threats of fake news in Nigeria.

To reduce the likelihood of confusion that may arise on election day concerning the use of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System technology (BiVAS) the Food Basket Foundation says it is relying on the media to enlighten the citizens on how it works.

The effort is supported by USAID through a local programme, aimed at strengthening civil and local advocacy engagement in Nigeria
