Taraba State Governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas

The United States Agency for International Development, USAID in partnership with the Taraba State Government has allocated N61 million to cover health insurance of 5,085 vulnerable people.

Governor Agbu Kefas says the project is strategic to the State Government’s policy to empower the less privileged in the State.

Many Nigerian homes are struggling to meet up with basic needs due to the rising cost of living, and this partnership between USAID and the Taraba State Government is expected to ease the financial burden of medical bills in poor homes, and economically empower them as well.

The sum of N61 million has been provided to cover the health insurance of 5,085 persons from poor and vulnerable households in the State, with orphaned children and their households as the target.

The initiative was launched by Governor Kefas, who was represented by his Deputy, Aminu Alkali in Jalingo the State capital.

He said the empowerment of vulnerable groups is one of the five-finger policies of the administration, and the timing of the project is strategic to ease economic hardship in poor homes.

The Chief of Party for the project, Joseph Inyang said aside the provision of health insurance cover to boost access to quality healthcare, the initiative also targets to mitigate the impact of sources of vulnerability through the economic empowerment of beneficiaries with vocational skills and business starter packs.

The project is the only one of its kind by the State Government in partnership with an international organisation to empower orphans, vulnerable children and their households.
