The National Agency for the Control of AIDS has urged Nigerians to celebrate Valentine’s Day responsibly by making choices that protect their health and reduce vulnerability to HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.
Director-General of NACA, Temitope Ilori, made the call in a statement, noting that the season of love is often associated with increased risk-taking behaviour.
She stressed the need for individuals to prioritise their wellbeing and that of their partners.
Dr. Ilori described responsible sexual behaviour as an act of love, emphasizing that knowing one’s HIV status and taking preventive measures are critical steps toward safeguarding the future.
The agency advised Nigerians to get tested for HIV, use condoms correctly and consistently, avoid multiple sexual partners, and steer clear of transactional sex.
It also warned against excessive alcohol consumption and substance abuse, which can impair judgment and lead to risky sexual behaviour.
NACA encouraged members of the public to access HIV prevention, treatment, and counselling services at government health facilities nationwide, reaffirming its commitment to expanding access to quality care and support services across the country.
