ANTHRAX

Acting Registrar, Veterinary Council of Nigeria, Oladotun Fadipe says Nigeria needs at least two or more veterinary doctors in each local government area to curb the spread of emerging infectious zoonotic diseases in the country.

Speaking at the 2025 veterinary retreat in Abuja, Fadipe said Nigeria does not have enough veterinary doctors to combat the outbreak of anthrax and other livestock diseases.

The veterinary retreat explored strategies for curtailing the spread of emerging and reemergence of zoonoses while seeking government’s assistance in the employment of more veterinary professionals in all the local communities for effective veterinary services.

Participants emphasized the need to re-engineer the mindset of the veterinary practitioners for work ethics and the introduction of technological tools such as artificial intelligence to further improve veterinary practices to enhance productivity.

The retreat with the theme: “Enhancing efficiency and productivity in challenging times” underscored the need for all hands to be on deck with one goal in mind in deploying expertise and achieving targeted results.
