The Chairman of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities, Professor Samuel Edoumiekumo says in a bid to check plagiarism and promote originality in academic research, the ‘EagleScan’ Plagiarism Detection Software has been developped.

The Chairman says like the Universities Transparency Accountability Solution, UTAS, software by ASUU, Eaglescan was developed by the vice chancellors in conjunction with Directors of ICT of six Nigerian Universities.

According to a statement from the committee, Professor Edoumiekumo revealed this at a meeting with the ASUU executive, where he said the software is fully ready for adoption in all Nigerian Tertiary Institutions.

On his part, ASUU President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke regrets the soured relationship in recent times between the committee of vice-chancellors but hopes such a meeting would go a long way in forging closer ties.

According to ASUU President, Vice-Chancellors were critical stakeholders in the University system, but over the years, many of them were influenced by third parties leaving them to function as political office holders rather than University administrators.

Osodeke expresses worry about the politicization in the appointment of Vice-Chancellors and how in some instances, the choice of who becomes a VC is narrowed down to the local government of the state where the University is located.

The statement said The meeting was attended by former ASUU Presidents Dipo Fasina, Nasir Fagge, Biodun Ogunyemi, and other members of ASUU Executive.
