The state of Insecurity across Kwara South and North Senatorial Districts has taken a disturbing turn following the circulation of a viral video where suspected bandits, reportedly apprehended by security operatives, claimed they were mobilised with vehicles and other weapons to unleash terror on innocent residents allegedly by the Kwara State government.
Reacting to the development in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital at a press conference, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) expressed concern over the growing insecurity in the state, the party called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently treat the situation in Kwara as a matter of national importance and to order a comprehensive federal investigation into the confessions made in the viral video.
Reading the party’s position on behalf of the State Chairman, Issa Adamu, the Kwara State Secretary of the PDP, Abdullahi Kayode, said the development has heightened fear and tension across the state.
He added that in the interest of public safety, justice, and national security, the party is demanding decisive action, including the declaration of a state of emergency in Kwara State.
The state Government is yet to react to the development. But the State Commissioner for Communications, Bola Olukoju, in a statement, dismissed the allegations, insisting that no armed bandits were arrested in Ifelodun Local Government Area. He described the viral video and accompanying claims as misinformation deliberately circulated to cause panic.
