Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has departed for Abuja after a successful trip to Belem, Brazil, where he represented President Bola Tinubu at the 30th Session of the United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP30.
The conference, which held in the Brazilian Amazon, brought together world leaders, development partners, and business executives to discuss climate change.
During the conference, Vice President Shettima emphasised Nigeria’s commitment to addressing climate change, stating that the country’s renewed climate agenda is a “solemn national commitment to preserve the planet for future generations.” He also called on global partners to recognise the economic value of nature and provide predictable, equitable, and accessible funding mechanisms to support climate change efforts.

Nigeria has reaffirmed its determination to lead the way in seeking solutions to climate change matters in Africa and beyond. Special Adviser to the President on NEC and Climate Change, Rukaiya El-Rufai, stated that Nigeria will use its influence to mobilise finance for the country and advocate for adaptation finance for African nations. She praised Nigeria for taking the lead in submitting its National Determined Contributions, NDCs to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
The COP 30 conference is themed “COP of Action and Implementation,” with a focus on operationalising NDCs and making climate-related finance pledges a reality. El-Rufai, urged other countries to emulate Nigeria’s lead and submit their NDCs, highlighting the country’s Climate Change Act and carbon market framework as examples of its commitment to climate action.
