The Cross River State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to improving access to water and sanitation, emphasizing the need to strengthen infrastructure, particularly in rural areas.

Governor Bassey Otu, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the State Executive Council, Orok Okon, made this known during the 2025 World Water Day celebration, themed “Glacier Preservation: Securing Water for Future Generations.”

The governor highlighted the impact of climate change on water resources, warning that no region was immune to its effects.

He stressed that preserving water sources, including glaciers, required collective responsibility beyond government efforts.

The Commissioner for Water Resources, Bassey Mensah, also spoke at the event, raising concerns over the indiscriminate drilling of boreholes and its long-term environmental effects.

Mensah further disclosed that the Cross River State Water Bill, currently awaiting the governor’s assent, was designed to address challenges such as open defecation and enhancing water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) practices.

As Cross River State continues its push for improved water access and sanitation, authorities say legislative action and community participation will be crucial to achieving lasting solutions.
