FIFA has confirmed that Egyptian referee Omar Amin Mohamed will officiate Nigeria’s decisive 2026 World Cup qualifying game against Republic of Benin in Uyo on October 14.
According to the appointment letter, Amin Mohamed will be assisted by compatriots Mahmoud Ahmed Kamel Ahmed Aboulergal and Ali Ahmed Tawfik Teleb, while another Egyptian, Moustafa Elbana Mahmoud Zakaria Mohamed, will serve as fourth official.
The referee assessor for the tie will be Jason Joseph Damoo from Seychelles, while Ghana’s Prosper Harrison Addo has been named match commissioner. Xolile Nokuthula Vilakati from Eswatini will act as the security officer.
The match, scheduled to kick off at 5pm local time, will take place at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
Nigeria’s clash with Benin has taken a new dimension after FIFA’s recent sanction against South Africa dramatically altered the Standings in Group C.
The disciplinary committee ruled that South Africa fielded an ineligible player, Teboho Mokoena, in their 2–0 win over Lesotho in March, awarding a 3–0 victory to Lesotho.
The decision has reshaped the group standings, throwing the race for qualification wide open.

As it stands, Benin and South Africa are tied on 14 points at the top after eight matches, with Benin leading on goal difference.
Nigeria and Rwanda are behind with 11 points apiece, while Lesotho, boosted by the ruling, now have nine. Zimbabwe, with only four points, are already eliminated.
For the Super Eagles, the development represents a vital lifeline. After five draws in eight matches, they face a must-win clash against Lesotho in Polokwane on October 10. Victory there would take them level with the leaders, depending on their results ahead of the showdown with Benin in Uyo four days later.
A maximum of six points from their remaining fixtures could take Nigeria to 17 points, potentially enough to secure top spot depending on other results. If not, they may still qualify as one of the best four runners-up, although their goal difference of +2 currently leaves them trailing behind both Benin and South Africa in their group and teams from other groups.
The encounter could prove decisive in determining which nation secures the coveted ticket to the World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
