Why we built Emergency Shelters in Niger Delta-NDDC

The Niger Delta Development Commission NDDC, says the construction of emergency shelters within the Niger Delta region, was to mitigate the impacts of flood disaster to the people of the region.

The managing director of the NDDC, Samuel ogbuku stated this during an inspection tour of the commission’s emergency shelters, at elebele Community, in ogbia local government area of bayelsa state.

Flooding is one challenge that has continued to confront the people of the Niger Delta region, especially communities in bayelsa, rivers and Delta states on yearly basis.

The impacts of the flood, have always left many communities homeless which are reasons for the NDDC to initiate the construction of six emergency shelters in bayelsa, rivers and Delta States, to serve as internally displaced persons camps.

The managing director of the NDDC, Samuel ogbuku said the emergency shelters will serve as mini-communities.

He urged the constractor handling the project to ensure that the projects were ready by the first quarter of next year
