A violent windstorm accompanied by a two-hour Rainfall swept through the city of Calabar, leaving behind a trail of destruction.

The storm, which hit late on Wednesday, forced many residents to take shelter wherever they could, as strong winds uprooted decades-old trees, brought down electric poles, and ripped roofs off buildings.

Major roads were rendered impassable, as fallen debris and broken electric poles brought traffic to a standstill.

The city has been plunged into darkness, with several neighborhoods reporting power outages.

In the aftermath, Governor Bassey Otu dispatched his Special Adviser on General Duties, Ekpenyong Akiba, for an emergency assessment.

Addressing reporters during the visit, Akiba emphasized the government’s commitment to proactive climate action and called on residents to support efforts by adopting responsible environmental practices.

For many residents, however, the storm left more than just debris, it left damages, displacements, and deep concerns.

With recovery efforts now underway, the state government says it is conducting a full impact assessment and will provide support to those affected.
