Women journalists lead protest against rape in Cross River State

The National Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, in Cross River State, took to the streets of Calabar, Wednesday, with a call on the Nigerian government to implement the prescribed stiffer punishment against rapists in the country.

NAWOJ who also joined in another protest on the same issue by the Civil Society Coalition Against Rape said such punishment will serve as a deterrent to others who thrive in the act.

The State Chairman of NAWOJ, Comrade Umoh Bassey-Edet, and the leader of the Coalition, Veronica Ema-Emah, said growing incidences of rape in Nigeria in General and Cross River State, in particular, is becoming unbearable to women and parents.

The group said the time to speak out is now, with a call to government to take quick action against rapists.

On their part, the Speaker of Cross River State House of Assembly, Eteng Williams, said the legislative arm will revisit the existing law against rapists, a development a former federal Lawmaker, Nkoyo Toyo Applauded.

The two anti-rape protests which started at the Millenium Park and the University of Calabar Main Gate moved through the  Governor’s Office, Police Headquarters, the Ministry of Women Affairs and the Cross River State House of Assembly.
