The Rivers State Government says it is committed to ensuring food security and sustainable agricultural practices that will provide sustainable food value chain for all citizens residing in the state.

The commissioner for Agriculture, Victor Kii stated this during a press briefing as part of activities to celebrate the twenty twenty-four World Food Day in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital

The theme for this year’s World Food Day “Right to Food for a Better Life and a Better Future,” highlights the importance of access to diverse, nutritious, and safe food for all.

The Rivers State Commissioner for Agriculture while announcing the state participation in this year’s celebration reaffirmed the State’s commitment to a food-secure future. He says: “The event promises to be an exciting opportunity for partnerships, exhibitions, and knowledge sharing that will create a better and sustainable food for all”.

Speaking on the outbreak of African Swine Fever in neighbouring Benin Republic, which resulted to the death of approximately 200 pigs, Victor Kii called for Heightened Surveillance and Reporting, adding that the state has been placed on high alert.

He says early detection was crucial in preventing the spread of the African Swine Fever, while farmers should be vigilant for symptoms such as coughing, vomiting and diarrhea, high fever, loss of appetite, bleeding and sudden death without signs.
