Igbo leaders in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja and some neighbouring states have advised all sons and daughters of Igbo land to participate actively in the 2023 general elections and vote for leaders capable of developing and uniting Nigeria.
The leaders made the appeal during an event to mark the 2022 World Igbo Day celebration in Abuja, the nation’s capital.
Records show that the World Igbo Day derives its origin in the event of September 29, 1966, in which over 30,000 Igbo people lost their lives in the pogroms that eventually led to the Civil War in 1967.
Every year since 1966, September 29 has been set aside to reflect on Igbo history and to renew commitment to Igbo unity. The theme for the 2022 World Igbo Day is, “Deliver Our Land Nigeria, Oh Lord Our God”.
The immediate past Vice Chairman, Igbo Communities in Abuja Municipal Area Council, Lawrence Onuchukwu, encouraged Igbo people all over the country to participate in the upcoming general elections to ensure credible leaders that will protect the interest of the Igbos.
Other speakers at the event advised Igbo people to continue to maintain unity and love for one another as they celebrated the new yam festival.
