A 300-level female student in the Department of Sociology at the Umaru Musa Yar’adu’a University, Katsina in North-West Nigeria has allegedly attempted suicide by consuming a bottle of hand sanitiser and local insecticide.

A female source in the hostel who pleaded anonymity confirmed the incident, saying the lady simply identified as Ummi, attempted suicide after her boyfriend jilted her on Friday night.

It was also gathered that the said Ummi’s lover, who is also a student at the institution, went to the female hostel and told her that it was over between them, though they do not know exactly what happened between them.

The source also said, even those in the same room with Ummi could not say what happened, as the lady went back to the room and took the hand sanitiser and the local insecticide, in protest over what the said lover did to her.

As of the time of this report, the said lover’s identity is yet to be known, but he is also a student of the University.

It was gathered that immediately after the student consumed the substances, she started throwing up and fainted, forcing the roommates to raise alarm. This led to the school authority provided an ambulance for the student to be rushed to the hospital for medical attention.

Efforts to reach the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Abdulhameed Danjuma, for comments were not successful, as calls put through were not answered nor returned.
