Election Observer group, Yiaga Africa has charged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to improve on the integrity and accuracy of the Voter register through timely revalidation of registration records and clean-up of the register.
The group made the call in Abuja at a policy meeting on “Voting Intentions Ahead of the 2027 General Elections.”
As the general elections approaches, concerns are mounting over dwindling voter turnout, particularly the low participation recorded in recent elections – a trend which election observer groups have linked to factors such as voter apathy, irregularities, lack of compliance, trust deficit and many more.
To help stem this tide, Yiaga Africa has conducted series of National Voter Intention Surveys aimed at testing prevailing assumptions about voter interest and participation, while identifying the key drivers and barriers to citizen engagement ahead of the 2027 elections.
The Report indicates that while 76% of Nigerians are unaware of the recent electoral reforms, 60% view voting as a civic duty, not a choice.
The Executive Director, Yiaga Africa, Samson Itodo, therefore urged the Nigerian electoral umpire, INEC to popularize the electoral reform designed to enhance the integrity of the electoral process.
Political parties were also advised to conduct issue-based campaigns, addressing voter priorities such as good governance, economy and security.
ai.live Correspondent quotes the Report as outlining more credible candidates, improved INEC logistics, better security as three key factors that will help boost voter turnout during the 2027 elections.
