The Zamfara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, (APC), has called for the immediate rescinding of the purported declaration of the seat of the Minority Leader and member representing Talata Mafara South Constituency, Aliyu Ango Kagara, vacant, by the state’s House of Assembly, under the leadership of Bilyaminu Ismail.
The APC, in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Yusuf Idris, described the decision as an embarrassment emanating from ignorance, abuse of office and a move to weed out the APC from the State Assembly.
It said the House at Tuesday’s sitting, 28th January, ignorantly declared the seat of our party member vacant, just for political reasons; to silence the opposition in the house, saying the party condemned the action in its totality.
The same Bilyaminu’s House leadership had suspended eight other members illegally from the House on 8th January last year, without recourse to the constitutional provisions, or House standing rules, and all the salaries and allowances of the affected members were withheld, just for voicing out their constituents security challenges before the House, which became a crime against the House leadership.
The APC claimed that the state lawmakers, the majority of whom are from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have been fighting and terrorizing even their members who refuse to dance to their tunes, especially as rubber stamps.
It adds that the members who want Kagara’s seat vacant are either ignorant or adamant about the fact that Aliyu Ango Kagara was inaugurated as a member representing Talata Mafara South on 8th June 2023, as a member of the 7th Assembly of Zamfara State.
It says that Kagara is now in the second legislative year – from June 2024 to June 2025.
The APC, while calling on the National Assembly to call the Zamfara State House of Assembly to order, wishes to caution the state legislature over this matter that may lead to court action with claims of damages, among others, for clamping on opposition member.
