At least 17 children have died in a fire at an Islamic school in Zamfara State. Several other pupils were injured and rushed to health centres in the town of Kauran Namoda, for treatment. It is believed that the fire broke out in a nearby house on Tuesday night and spread to the school while the children, believed to be aged 10-16, were sleeping.
Local authorities and emergency responders were sent to the scene, but the fire had already resulted in significant casualties. According to eye witnesses, the location of the school made it difficult for those trying to stop the fire. The fire’s rapid spread was aided by what corn and millet stalks stored at the school premises.
Those who responded to the fire first thought all one hundred children in the school had been brought out of the building safely , only to face the grim reality that 17 of the children had not made it out and were burnt beyond recognition. All 17 have already been buried.
