The Zamfara State Government has reiterated its commitment to support the Northwest Governors’ Forum’s efforts to address development challenges, and engender positive regional development, to improve the lives of the citizens.
Governor Dauda Lawal, made this commitment while hosting the Northwests’ Forum, as well as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) team, at the Government House in Gusau, the Zamfara State capital.
The Northwest region has been plagued with several development challenges, such as banditry, a huge number of out-of-school children roaming the streets, youth unemployment, poverty, and a battered economy, among others.
These challenges require the collaborative efforts of the Seven Northwest States if they must be tackled head-on, and perhaps this explains the reason the Northwest Governors came together to set up a team with the UNDP, to study the situation and furnish the forum with recommendations.

The team which is being led by the Director General of the Northwest Governors’ Forum, Maryam Yahaya, informed Governor Dauda Lawal, that they are in the state to carry out the assignment the forum gave them, and will interact with the state commissioners, smallholder farmers, some traditional rulers, youths and women’s groups.
Governor Dauda Lawal opined that if Zamfara challenges are addressed, almost half of the Northwest problems will have been solved, and this is why his administration is focusing on tackling the myriad of challenges facing the state.
The Northwest Governors’ Forum seeks to address conflict and foster peace and cooperation, and promote economic stability among other things in the region.
The team has so far visited five states in the zone.
