Some residents of Zamfara State are asking the Nigeria Police to address the issues of extortion, conditions of bail, corruption and improper selection in the recruitment of new personnel, to bring about sanity in the system, stressing that doing so will reduce crime in the society.
They made the call during a stakeholders meeting convened by the Zamfara State Police Command, as part of activities marking the National Day of Police in Gusau, the state capital.
The stakeholders meeting convened by the Zamfara State Police Command, was aimed at providing opportunity for religious and community leaders, unions and civil society groups, to offer suggestions, on how best the police can carry out their constitutional duties, to improve the security situation.
The stakeholders identified several issues which include injustice, unfairness, extortion, harassment, indiscriminate arrest, bribery and corruption, among others, which they want the Nigeria Police to address, if they must nip crimes in the bud.
The Zamfara State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Maikaba, who was represented by the Deputy Commissioner in charge of Administration and Finance, Bello Fago, asked residents of the state to stop giving bribe to police personnel, as a step towards stamping out corruption from the system.
The general consensus at the meeting is that partnership, collaboration and collective efforts are required to ensure a crime-free society, hence the need for all hands to be on deck, to stem the tide of criminalities in Zamfara State, Northwest Nigeria.
