The Zamfara State government says the nonpayment of scholarship fees for its indigenes to study in Cyprus, is one of the several issues inherited by the present administration.

At a Media briefing in Abuja, the State government revealed that 93 students sponsored by the immediate past administration to study at the Cyprus International University, are currently stranded due to non-payment of their scholarship fees.

It explained that the previous administration led by Governor Bello Matawalle, abandoned the responsibility of funding the students since 2022 which exposed them to severe hardships.

The Governor Dauda Lawal administration told Journalists that on assumption of office in 2023, it realized that there was no legal agreement between the State government and the University.

It further noted that beside the payment of scholarships for the sponsored students to Cyprus International University, the present administration has made payments for sponsored students to India, those sponsored to Crescent University Abeokuta as well as the payment of the NECO and WAEC examinations fees running into billions of Naira which were outstanding at the time it came to office in May 2023.
