Zaria Flooding: State Govt Urges Residents to Stop Building on Waterways

The Kaduna State Government has committed to implementing both short and long-term measures, to tackle the floods that have affected multiple communities across the state.

The Chief of Staff to the Governor, Liman Kila, made this known during a visit to Chikaji, in Zaria, to sympathise with the victims of the recent flood.

The recent flooding in Chikaji, a community in Zaria Local Government Area of Kaduna State left homes submerged, and many families displaced.

During his visit to assess the extent of the damage, residents of the community told Sani Liman that the flooding was due to uncontrolled excavation which has eroded the land and weakened natural water barriers.

Liman Kila said the state government has concluded plans to prevent further flooding.

He also emphasised that local communities must play an active role in preventing future disasters.

Yusuf Idris, the Chairman of the Local Emergency Management Committee, highlighted the urgent need for sensitisation campaigns, to educate the residents on the dangers of building on waterways, a practice that has become prevalent in many flood-prone areas.

While the government works to mitigate the immediate impacts, and establish long-term solutions, residents have been called upon to stop sand excavation, and to ensure that no further damage is done to already fragile lands.
