12-year old assumes office as Nigeria’s Women Affairs Minister

Nigeria’s Girl-Child Minister of Women Affairs, Nana Firdausi Bashir says every child in Nigeria should not worrry because she “will make them all feel good” as their desires for gender equality will be met.

Bashir made the declaration when she resumed office as the Minister at exactly 9:30am on Monday in her office in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

Nana who is a 12-year old student of student of Shehu Kangiwa Primary School Kebbi while addressing girls who visited her office in commemoration of the International Day of the Girl-Child said questions on out of school girls seems hard to get answered in Nigeria but she will however make all nessesary consultations to get them back to the learning environment.

She decried the huge gender divide in the digital development in Nigeria which is in favour of the boys saying, the Girls 4 Girls Platform has been put in place to address the concern.

The Primary 6 Girl-Child Minister said, building communuty based structures in addressing gender violence while collaborating with the Ministry of Education to improve safety of girls in school is top on her agenda for the development of the female child.

Her 7-point agenda also included ending girl child trafficking and molestation, reducing number of out of school girl children and ensuring that they complete basic education among others.

Nana Firdausi Bashir is an Indegene of Kebbi State, and the second child in a family of 5.

The International Day of the Girl-Child is a day set aside by the United Nations to celebrate the girl child while delibrating on issues affecting their development. The theme of this year’s celebration is “Digital Generation, Our generation”
