Northern Governors have inaugurated the Board of Trustees of the Northern Nigeria Security Trust Fund as part of efforts to strengthen regional collaboration in addressing insecurity across the nineteen northern states.

The inauguration took place during a joint meeting of the Northern Governors’ Forum and the Northern Traditional Rulers Council in Kaduna.

Insecurity has remained one of the biggest obstacles to development in Northern Nigeria.

Now, northern leaders say the region is moving from discussions to coordinated action.

The newly inaugurated Northern Nigeria Security Trust Fund is expected to mobilise sustainable funding, strengthen intelligence collaboration, and complement the efforts of federal security agencies in addressing insecurity across the region.

The initiative follows the resolutions of the Northern Governors’ Forum to establish a common platform for tackling the region’s security challenges.

Chairman of the Northern Governors’ Forum and Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, said the Trust Fund is not intended to become another layer of bureaucracy but a practical, transparent, and results-oriented mechanism for improving security coordination across Northern Nigeria.

He urged all nineteen northern states to fulfil their commitment to contribute ₦1 billion monthly to ensure the effective operation of the fund.

Host Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State described the Trust Fund as a significant step towards a coordinated regional response to insecurity.

He also reiterated his support for the establishment of state police, describing it as a strategic reform capable of strengthening local security and complementing existing national security structures.

The inauguration of the Board of Trustees marks the beginning of what northern leaders describe as a coordinated regional effort to restore peace, protect lives, and create an enabling environment for economic growth and sustainable development across Northern Nigeria.
