The country Representative of the United Nations Population Fund, Elizabeth Ulla Mueller has called on the National Assembly to speed up the passage of the gender equality and opportunity bill.
She made the call at a media briefing in Abuja ahead of the 2023 World Population Day.
On December 15, 2021, the Nigerian Senate for the second time rejected the Gender and Equal Opportunities (GEO) bill designed to secure the rights of women and girls in the country.
The rejection which generated protests by women led by wives of some state Governors and other top political figures in the country failed to scale through after it was first presented in 2016.
The country Representative of the United Nations Population Fund, Elizabeth Ulla Mueller said the 10th National Assembly should reconsider the passage of the bill.
The chairman National Population Commission, Isa Kwarra said it has become imperative for government to give attention to the empowerment of women and girls.
The theme of the 2023 World Population Day,” Unleashing the Power of Gender Equality: Uplifting The Voices of Women and Girls to Unlock Our World of Infinite Possibilities” is seen as a call on relevant authorities to empower women and girls through leadership inclusivity and equal opportunities in mainstream governance.
