Plateau United Football Club of Jos has emerged champions of the 2024 Plateau State Challenge Cup.
They defeated Mighty Jets Football Club of Jos in a penalty shootout after scores were level at full time. The final was a derby between two clubs that have had a rivalry that lasted for decades.
Described as the Jos El Classico, the match between Plateau United and city rivals, Mighty Jets always promises lots of fireworks on and off the pitch, bringing a lot of people to the stadium irrespective of class, and the 2024 edition was no exemption as the Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, was also present.
After a barren first half, Plateau United were awarded a penalty in the middle of the second half, which was converted by Izuchukwu Chimezie. But the Plateau United fans were still in a jubilant mood when a penalty was awarded at the other end of the field, leading to an equaliser. With scores level at regulation time, it was time for penalties, which kept everyone on the edge of their seats. At the end, Plateau United were victorious after converting three, with Mighty Jets losing three.
