Fresh uncertainty now surrounds Iran’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup amid ongoing diplomatic tensions between the United States and Iran.

The development follows earlier comments by U.S President Donald Trump, who maintained a hardline stance on Iran during renewed tensions between both countries, raising concerns over travel restrictions and visa approvals ahead of the tournament to be co-hosted by U.S, Canada, and Mexico.

Iran Football Federation President, Mehdi Taj says players, coaches, and officials are still waiting to receive visas despite ongoing engagements with FIFA.

Taj says the federation is demanding guarantees from world football governing body, FIFA to ensure that the Iranian delegation can enter the United States without restrictions.

The concerns intensified after Iranian football officials, including Taj, reportedly faced immigration issues during FIFA’s annual congress in Canada.

Despite the diplomatic standoff, FIFA President Gianni Infantino has assured that Iran will participate in the World Cup.

Iran are scheduled to face New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt during the group stage of the competition, which begins on June 11, 2026.
