As preparations for the 2027 General Elections gather momentum and the official opening of campaigns for the elections set to be in about two weeks time, August 19, 2026, there is anxiety over the official comprehensive list by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC of the names of Candidates that would participate in the Elections.
The yet- to- be released details of Candidates is making many wonder on whose names would actually appear officially on the portal of the Electoral Umpire especially with the alleged unsettled issues over the outcomes of the primaries held by the various political parties.
Although many Political Parties have been announcing the successful upload of particulars of their Candidates to INEC’s portal to meet the deadline set, even with the latest coming from the All Progressives Congress, APC over the upload of 27 Governorship Candidates to the Commission’s portal; INEC has said it will release a Comprehensive general list of the Candidates in due course.

INEC announced in a public notice that campaigns for the Presidential and National Assembly elections will begin on Tuesday, August 19, 2026, and end on Friday, January 15, 2027, 24 hours before the elections scheduled for Saturday, January 16, 2027.
The campaigns for the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections will begin on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, and conclude on Friday, February 5, 2027, ahead of the elections slated for Saturday, February 6, 2027.
INEC stated that the timetable was drawn in accordance with the Electoral Act 2026, which provides that political campaigns shall commence no earlier than 150 days before an election and must end at least 24 hours before polling.
