The 2027 electioneering campaigns have officially commenced, with political parties warming up towards the next round of general elections.

Nigerians are expectant to see whether the campaigns are issue based or mere rhetorics.

According to the 2027 election timetable released by the independent national electoral commission, INEC, political parties are allowed to commence their campaigns and other electioneering activities from August 19, 2026.

This is also in tandem with the Electoral Act 2026, which stipulates that campaigns may not commence earlier than 150 days to polling day.

Political development watchers are, however, sceptical about the quality of the content of campaigns. Rather than canvassing for votes, being moulded on issues affecting the people and the programmes that provide the dividends of democracy, political rallies have been characterised in showmanship, hate speech and character assassination in the past.

It is crystal clear that insecurity, poor infrastructure, economic instability, and unending kidnapping of citizens should form the basis for the campaigns ahead of the 2027 general election. How has the present administration handled these key issues, and what difference is the opposition proposing.

These are the pertinent engagements that Nigerians demand as campaigns take off.

Traditional rulers and religious leaders also have a big role in holding those in power and potential leaders accountable in their campaign promises. What is the essence of a traditional leader or a religious leader with followership without any recourse to the livelihood of their followers.

In summation, the electorate holds the aces. Their votes should be reserved for those who can articulate inherent problems of the country and how these anomalies can be corrected. Campaigns should address these issues, hence Nigeria’s Democracy is on the path of growth.
