As preparations for the 2027 general election gather momentum, Christian clerics have been urged to play a more active role in promoting credible leadership and encouraging citizens to make informed electoral choices.
The call was made by Reverend Father Andrew Dewan of Plateau State University at the gathering of Catholic priests at St. Augustine’s Major Seminary in Jos, Plateau State where they reflected on their role in Nigeria’s democratic process ahead of the 2027 polls.
The meeting focused on the Church’s prophetic role in promoting good governance, strengthening democracy, and encouraging responsible civic participation.
Guest speaker, Reverend Father Andrew Dewan, said politics is too important for the clergy to remain passive observers, stressing that religious leaders have a moral obligation to speak on issues that shape the nation’s future and to guide citizens towards making informed electoral decisions.
In his contribution, Reverend Dr. Louis Ngare, said the theme of the gathering was carefully chosen to contribute to the deepening of Nigeria’s democracy by promoting active citizen participation and responsible leadership.
The priests were also urged to speak out against social vices, promote justice and accountability, and encourage their parishioners to be patriotic and actively participate in the democratic process.
