In a remarkable step towards rehabilitation and reintegration, fifty-eight inmates under the Nigerian Correctional Service, Ogun State Command, have been matriculated into various academic programmes of the National Open University of Nigeria for the 2026 academic session.
The initiative is part of a human capacity development programme aimed at equipping inmates with knowledge and skills for life beyond incarceration.
The matriculation ceremony, held at the Old Abeokuta Custodial Study Centre in Ibara, brought together correctional authorities, academic leaders, and key stakeholders in the justice sector.
The programme, a collaboration between the Nigerian Correctional Service and the National Open University of Nigeria, offers fully funded educational opportunities to inmates as part of ongoing reforms in the correctional system.

Director of the NOUN Abeokuta Study Centre, Prof. Oyekunle Adegboyega, alongside correctional officials, encouraged the inmates to seize the opportunity to transform their lives and prepare for a better future.
Among the fifty-eight matriculated students are two female inmates studying Political Science and Economics, while others are enrolled in courses such as Peace and Conflict Management, Entrepreneurship, and Religious Studies.
The event was marked by moments of hope and inspiration, as speakers including representatives of the prison authority and the Ogun State Ministry of Justice—emphasized the importance of education in reshaping lives.
The theme of the matriculation, “Preparing for Life After Incarceration: Beyond the Bars to Sustainability,” underscores the broader goal of rehabilitation and reintegration.
